It’s Time to Get Tougher on SPAM
For years now we have relied on the Akismet spam solution packaged with WordPress. Today I logged into my blog to find some incredibly inappropriate spam in the queue. We need to do a better job of blocking this completely, while still ensuring that it’s easy for students (especially our youngest bloggers) to post comments on their teacher’s blogs without running into complicated CAPTCHA questions.
I’m enabling another plugin called WordPress Zero Spam, to see if it mitigates the issue. If you notice any issues, or if legitimate comments aren’t coming through, please reach out.

Two spam comments since yesterday. That might be an improvement, but it’s not the “Zero Spam” I’m hoping to achieve here. Back to the drawing board.

Have you had a look at https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/anti-spam/
I use it for all my sites. No config, just works, javascript magic. One thing I noticed though is that it says it’s not compatible with bbPress. Might be an issue for commons.

You could also try Cookies for Comments. Requires a cookie before submitting a comment for approval. If no cookie is set, comment is rejected. Doesn’t log anything either, so it’s a real simple plugin with no DB tables.
